Nothing takes the edge off a hectic day like relaxing in the comfort of your own home. To boost your mood even more, decorate your space with a thoughtful mix of happiness-inducing elements such as cozy chairs, uplifting colors and lively patterns. For ideas on how to amp up the feel-good factor in your house, read on to learn how six designers have crafted blissful ambience in rooms they designed.

1. Soothe the senses. "Create a nurturing environment that provides that aaaah feeling when you walk through the door," says interior designer Kate Singer of Kate Singer Home. "Fragrance is especially important." She recommends placing scented candles and cut flowers in each room, as she does in her own home. "Certain smells bring me back to a special place or time—from summers at the shore to springtime in the garden to magical fall and winter holidays shared with family and friends." 2. Add color. "As spring slowly awakens, it's the perfect time to 'upbeat' your home—and the most dramatic way to give a room a major lift is with paint," says interior designer Jamie Drake of Drake Design Associates. Light hues, such as soft blue, are particularly soothing when you're trying to create a serene look. "Soft coral on the walls in an eggshell finish, for example, will give a room a glow, and subtly reflect the light....And if you paint a ceiling a celestial pale blue, summer skies will ride overhead all year long." 3. Balance the scales. "The proportions of furniture, art and objects in a room is key to creating visual comfort, which is as important as physical comfort in bringing a sense of peace and calmness to an interior," says designer Nestor Santa-Cruz of Gensler. "Balance large elements with small ones—rooms with elements in different scales are more visually comfortable." Photographed for Woman's Day by Gordon Beall

4. Do some groundwork. "The floor is a stage," says rug and accessories designer Liora Manné. "It offers a great platform for introducing art into one's life, a place for adding colors and forming moods." Look for an eye-catching piece, such as her Goldfish rug, which gives a room a sense of tranquility, calmness and peacefulness. "The painterly quality of this rug, which was created using multiple layers of fibers in blue tones, offers a Zen sensibility. At the same time, the bright, vibrant orange colors of the swimming fish add a sense of optimism and happiness, and give the feeling of life moving forward and progressing." 5. Embrace nature. "Infusing rooms with earthy, organic elements elicits happiness," says interior designer Jackie Higgins of Beach Glass Designs. She prefers colorful seashells, which she groups together or places in pairs. "If you put something organic in a room, it feels less contrived." Photographed for Woman's Day by Chris Vaccaro

6. Introduce pops of pattern and texture. "I like to throw in a little bit of pattern, such as striped or geometric pillows on the sofa or a great bold print on the side chair," says stylist and designer Erinn Valencich. To provide contrast, add a floral touch. "Oversize vases filled with white hydrangea or pink peonies always add softness and a touch of texture to any space."
